LASIK is a two step procedure. A flap of corneal tissue is created then the underlying tissue is reshaped with a laser. IntraLASIK is when the flap is made with a laser instead of a blade. Dr. Mozayeni is the first and most experienced cornea specialist in the region to offer IntraLASIK. IntraLASIK has proven itself to be safer and more precise. Now Dr. Mozayeni and Providence Eye & Laser Specialists are proud to be the first to offer Allegretto IntraLASIK.

The lasers used to reshape the cornea have gone through several generations of upgrades and the most recent buzzword has been "Wavefront." These Wavefront guided lasers have been promoted as the "customized" approach to reshaping the cornea. Yes, the results have been very good, and in some cases better than non-wavefront treatments for specific patients. However, not everyone qualifies for this approach because of FDA limits, and because of limitations in the technology.

The currently FDA approved "wavefront guided" lasers are VISX (CustomVue), Bausch & Lomb (Zyoptix), and LadarVision (Custom Cornea). All of these are brand names of the same technology. To learn about the differences in these lasers click here.

All of these lasers also reshape the cornea the same way; by reshaping the middle of the cornea differently than the edges. Although this approach works well for many people, it may not be ideal for everyone. Sometimes it can lead to less than ideal quality of vision including such things as halos, glare, and ghosting of vision.

The Allegretto laser specifically addresses the shortcomings of ALL the other lasers by maintaining the natural shape of the cornea for most patients. This can lead to better quality of vision for many candidates. In addition the Allegretto has the most sophisticated eye tracker and is the fastest laser available in the world, thereby improving the likelihood of an excellent outcome.

The Allegretto laser has been used worldwide for some time and has been FDA approved in the USA since late 2003. It is the number one selling laser worldwide at this time, and is available at Providence Eye & Laser Specialists in Charlotte - the first to offer this technology in the region.

Dr. Mozayeni is the first and only one to currently offer Allegretto IntraLASIK in the Charlotte region.
