The technology advancements in the laser vision correction industry have been tremendous over the past few years. This has been to the advantage of both surgeon and patient.

However, it has made it difficult for the consumer to become adequately educated. Many recent advertisements boast a laser called Zyoptix®. We feel that these ads are confusing and occasionally misleading, and would like to provide the opportunity for understanding the terms before you make such an important decision in your life.

WaveFront technology is a general term used to describe the technology that can customize the IntraLASIK or LASIK procedure. Several companies produce lasers that are capable of performing WaveFront guided treatments. These include VISX®, Bausch & Lomb®, and Alcon®. Each of these companies labels their laser with a trade name. VISX labels their system CustomVue®, Bausch & Lomb labels it Zyoptix®, and Alcon labels it CustomCornea® Each one is FDA approved and has official FDA clinical results associated with it which can be found on the FDA website. You will see here that the results were best with the CustomVue system by the VISX Star S4, which is what is used at Providence Eye & Laser Specialists. Using the VISX S4 CustomVue laser, 96% of all patients obtained 20/20 vision or better. Using the Bausch & Lomb Zyoptix laser, 91% obtained 20/20 or better.

The benefits of WaveFront technology are limited to only some types of astigmatism and lower levels of nearsightedness. It can be of benefit to some people but some of the newest technology may be an even better choice for many. That is why we offer Allegretto laser technology, which was introduced to the Charlotte area by Providence Eye & Laser Specialists. None of these lasers can be used to create a corneal flap and, therefore, IntraLASIK® can only be performed by a surgeon that uses an additional laser manufactured by Intralase Corporation.

What is most important, however, is how the technology is used and implemented by the doctor. Yes, the best laser always makes a difference, but the careful attention to detail by your IntraLASIK surgeon and his staff is critical. Dr. Mozayeni strongly believes that his results are some of the best in the nation, but mainly because of his personalized approach. Of course, implementing the best lasers has certainly been important in achieving this goal.
